Priory Church of St George, Dunster

Highlight • Religious Site

Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of Saint GEORGE, to whom the church of Dunster was dedicated, but the veneration of him goes back a long way to early Christianity. A martyr who is equated with George is said to have lived in the third century.
The legend of Saint George as a dragon slayer is well known and widespread, however, and he is usually depicted - in paintings or as a statue - as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback.
The memorial day of the very popular George in the calendar of saints is celebrated on April 23rd in both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. Among other things, he is the patron saint of the English kingdom, and some of the orders and decorations awarded there also bear his name.

Steep Descent to Dunster

Highlight • Climb

The sign at the top said the other way down to Dunster was the VERY steep route. Because it was wet, drizzly and low cloud we chickened out, Jimbo ended up in a hedge, Andy and I had problems stopping, brakes were on their limits, so go careful unless you are a psycho.

Horner Tea Gardens

Highlight • Cafe

Open from 11am for the most delicious selection of cake and, of course, cream teas. Indoor and outdoor seating. Plus seating under a shelter so best of both worlds.

Periwinkle Tearoom

Highlight • Cafe

The National Trust Periwinkle Tea Rooms is a great place to end a run (or stop halfway around). The scones and cream teas are particularly good, but they do serve a full range of drinks, snacks and light meals.
Open every day from 11:00 - 16:00.

Periwinkle Cottage Tea Room

Highlight • Cafe

Brilliant cottage tea rooms nestled in the Somerset countryside along the Regional Cycle Route 51 and Two Moors Way, on the climb up to Selworthy Beacon.

Would recommend the cream teas! Check out the gift shop and gallery whilst you're there, all housed in this National Trust owned thatched cottage.

Minehead station is the northern terminus of the West Somerset heritage railway. The railway runs from here south along the coast to Watchet and then south down the edge of the Quantock Hills to Bishops Lydeard near Taunton. There are regular steam and heritage diesel trains running throughout the year but check the website for timings. west-somerset-railway.co.uk
