Hartside Summit Viewpoint

Highlight • Summit

The highest point of the Pennine Cycleway and the ultimate achievement for cyclists coming from the south or north.

At the top stands a Sustrans Millennium milepost, providing a perfect vantage to take in the distant Lakeland fells.

Once, a café graced this summit, renowned for its famous home baking. Unfortunately, in around 2017, it met its demise in a blaze.

The descent in both directions offers a thrilling ride on excellent tarmac, with a road that's not overly steep.

Fiend's Fell Summit Trig Point

Highlight • Summit

Fiend's Fell at 634 metres is a UK designated Nuttall and can be reached quite easily on good footpaths from Hartside Pass. On the same ridgeline further on is Melmerby Fell, which at 709 metres is another designated Nuttall. Taking in both of these Nuttalls gives you great open views out over the barren beauty of the Northern Pennines. Fiend's Fell has a trig pointed summit.

Knapside Hill Cairn

Highlight • Historical Site

Nestled between Fiend's Fell and Melmbery Fell is Knapside Hill. It has a nice cairn, and stone wall. It's a good spot to have a rest break, and there are good views of Melmerby Hill in front of you, along with the rugged beauty of the Northern Pennines.

Melmerby Fell

Highlight • Summit

Melmerby Fell at 709 metres is another UK designated Nuttall. A nice walk is to take in Fiend's Fell and Melmerby Fell together in a loop from Hartside Pass. Fiend's Fell at 634 metres is another Nuttall. Melmerby has a nice cairned summit and has great views back towards Hartside and onwards to Stony Rigg.

You have to go through this stream, there are several rocks above the water surface, be careful though, they are slightly loose and it would be easy to slip and get wet feet. The water is not deep, although it had not been raining on previous days
