Seahouses Harbour and Beach

Highlight • Beach

A large village nestled on the coast, Seahouses has a beautiful beach, fishing port and harbour. The village is a popular destination thanks to its rich sea wildlife such as seals and seabirds and as it is the point of embarkment to visit the Farne Islands. The village is a perfect place to whistle away time, enjoying the fresh sea breeze and an ice cream. It is also known for its kippers that have been produced locally in the village for over 200 years.

Little Free Library on the Northumberland Coast

This lovely little book repository appeared on my patch recently. It's part of the littlefreelibrary.org movement - which I'd never heard of. But it's a delightful, co-operative premise; take a book, leave a book. Help yourself. (OK, you don't have a book to leave. But I'm sure it would be acceptable if you paid it back sometime in the future...)

West Fleetham Pond

Like everyone else cycling this lovely lane on NCN1, you'd see no reason not to ride straight past the gate on this double-bend corner. It used to have a handsome sign, and a namplate, and a signboard. It led to a simple but delightfully secluded little bird hide. But when I stopped by today, the signs have gone, and so has the hide. But it still has a short path (like, 50m) from the gate to a lovely little spot overlooking this pond. And the birds were still there, they don't care that the signs have gone. So - stop by. It will fill a delightful minute or two of your day...
(Postscript: I made a couple of phone calls, to discover that Northumberland Wildlife Trust, who used to manage the Reserve, pulled out recently... what a shame.)
