Cinder Track Between High Hawsker and Robin Hood's Bay

Highlight • Cycleway

A very nice track, suitable for gravel bikes but maybe more comfortable on MTB. It's a very long hill but be cautious and do not road test a new bike you have built on it all the way down and then immediately snap your chain and realise you haven't brought any spare links or the tool. If you do do that, it's a long 8 mile push back to the top, but very scenic.

The Millennium Sculpture wasn't actually finished and installed until 2004. It stands near the NCN1 above Robin Hood's Bay.

The NCN1 travels along the old railway line above Robin Hood's Bay before following the cinder track north to Whitby.

Old railway line from Scarborough to Whitby. Not as flat as I thought. Highest point 700feet above sea level.

The Cinder Track extends from Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough along the coastline, almost completely traffic-free for 21.5 miles (34.6 km).

Running along the path that used to be home to the Whitby to Scarborough railway line until 1965, this now is a cracking place to explore for cyclists, runners and hikers alike.

Take extra care when busiest at the weekends at high season for families and dogs.

October 17, 2023,Cinder Track – Complete Cinder track loop from Whitby
If you want to follow this, the beginning section involves carrying bike up the 199 Abbey steps. This avoids the long slog up out of Whitby (or you could park at the Abbey). The recording goes about a km beyond the end of the cinder track, to Scalby where there are a couple of pubs and a tea shop. The …
