Around 30 species of birds breed in the reed bed, including pintail, wigeon, shoveler and teal. The nature reserve is also one of the best breeding areas in Hesse for spotted crake and water rail. Other breeding species include lapwing, common snipe, marsh harrier, long-eared owl and bluethroat. The most conspicuous, however, are the breeding white storks.
