Noordmeulen

Highlight • Monument

The Noordmeulen or Moulin du Nord is a windmill in the municipality of Steenvoorde in the French Northern Department. The mill is located one kilometer northwest of the city center of Steenvoorde, near the road to Wormhout. It is a wooden post mill that was used as a flour mill.

The exact year of construction of the mill was no longer known, but the year 1576 was found during restoration work. Notarial deeds from 1711 and 1713 stating the current name were found. However, the mill was abandoned in 1953 and was also damaged in 1959. The last miller and owner died in 1964 and the mill was sold in 1968, but fell into disrepair. In 1975, the municipality of Steenvoorde became the owner and the restoration started in 1977. After heavy damage at the start of the restoration, the mill was rebuilt. The Noordmeulen was inaugurated in 1984. In 1977 the mill was also registered as a historic monument.

Cassel

Highlight • Other

The Mont du Cassel, on which the beautiful little town of Cassel sits, is the highest point in French Flanders. It was strategically important in several wars. Nowadays you can enjoy the view of the surrounding landscape from up here and stop off in one of the cozy cafés in the old town.
