The Hourquette Nère is a mountain pass which is 2,465 meters above sea level. Located at the foot of the Aygues Cluses peak, it offers a magnificent view of the Bastan and Gourget lakes.

Lake of Port Bielh

Highlight • Lake

This natural lake, of glacial origin, is revealed to walkers who arrive via the passes. Well sheltered behind its granite barrier, it is impossible to see it from the bottom of the massif.
Over time, the geology of the massif made it possible to dig a basin and create a rocky edge. It is this “glacial lock” which erases Port Bielh Lake from the landscape when you are below.

Apart from a few pines, you will not find much vegetation there. The site is essentially mineral but still offers small lawns suitable for bivouacs.

Lakes of Bastanet

Highlight • Other

Two of the many lakes on one of my day trips. About at the end of the second lake you can see the Lac de l'Oule from above over a small pass to the south. Picture is above.

Bastan Refuge

Highlight • Restaurant

The Bastan refuge is located a little higher up, on the shores of Lac du Milieu. It is open from the last weekend of May to the first weekend of October, continuously.

It offers a 12-seat dormitory as well as a refectory for which we advise you to book in advance on the refuge website: refugedebastan.fr/dates-douverture

However, the refuge remains open out of season (you will need to bring your duvets) to accommodate hikers in need of shelter.

Middle Bastan Lake

Highlight • Lake

The middle lake lies, as its name suggests, between the lower and upper lakes. The three of them form a string of lakes called the Bastan lakes. Of glacial origin, this natural body of water is now home to a few species of fish (including trout) and makes up the landscape with beautiful islets of century-old pines all around.

Lower Bastan Lake

Highlight • Lake

The lower lake forms a peaceful and preserved lake site, out of sight. You will have the feeling of entering a crater as it is protected by its environment. This lake is perhaps the most intimate and exotic of the Néouvielle reserve.

Lake Oule

Highlight • Lake

Lake Oule, an artificial body of water, is one of the largest in the Néouvielle reserve. His work dates from the interwar period, when the Midi railway company decided to transform a pasture plateau into a water reservoir in order to supply the Eget hydroelectric power station. Its waters come from Lake Oredon through a canal designed to supply the body of water.
