From here you don't feel like driving in Germany or Austria anymore. You can tell by the smell, the plants, the stones - the south is near. :)

A superb cycle path along a former railway line, an absolute experience. From Tarvisio onward, it gets even better. More info: alpe-adria-radweg.com/mobile/de

August 25, 2024,Alpe-Adria-Radweg 🚴 Von Villach nach Tarvisio
Our stage 1️⃣ on the Alpe-Adria cycle path from Villach to Tarvisio:

We start in Villach in Carinthia. Highlights are the Arnoldstein monastery ruins with a mountain view, the border crossing into Italy, the wonderful mountain panorama near Coccau and our arrival in the mountain village of Tarvisio.

First day from Villach to Venice - along the Gail is nice but Tarvisio is not a revelation at first glance. Let's see what the perspective of a pedestrian changes. After a walk, Tarvisio looks a bit friendlier - main square with fountain but many restaurants are closed on Mondays. A bit like a ski resort in the off-season....

After just one Italian night, we wave briefly into Slovenia at the Dreiländereck this morning and are in Carinthia after just a few small climbs. We are riding on the well-known Alpe Adria Cycle Path and enjoy the mountain views as well as the colorful paddle boats on the wild Gail.
And another nice komoot anecdote: Shortly before Villach, we …

This stage had a lot to offer again. We left Villach an der Drau. It went through fields and fields. From time to time the Autobahn crossed our path. Soon the route went along the Gail. The pine forest and the buildings reminded us strongly of Italy. Today's tour was characterized by long, gentle climbs. This becomes very clear on …

We arrived in Bella Italia. Today it wasn't as hot as the last few days, Villach had a light rain. Optimal weather, the rain was rather refreshing because it wasn't that bad. The first part was the most beautiful in terms of scenery and when we arrived in Italy it was just as nice. It went up and down the …

In Beljak we joined the "real" Alpe Adria. Another couple from Jesenice joined us in Trbiž. Cut off the Garmin and then we moved on…

Today, our first destination was the city center of Villach. After a pleasant stroll through the city, it was time to climb steadily along the Gail River. We took a longer break in Arnoldstein. The heat forced us to!

Then we crossed the border into Italy. We continued uphill through a beautiful mountain landscape to Tarvisio.
