Moulin-Rouge Lock

Highlight • Monument

The Canal d'Orléans is an old waterway that connects the Loire to the Canal du Loing and the Canal de Briare. Over its 78 kilometer length, the canal comprises a total of 26 reaches (portions of a canal between two locks) and 29 locks.

The Moulin-Rouge reach is 1,500 meters long. It is bordered upstream by the lock of Combreux and, downstream, by the lock of Moulin-Rouge.

The lock is no longer functional, but that does not detract from the charm of the place!

Superb view of the Loire

Highlight • Other

Very pretty view of the Loire, preserved in its wild state. Nature changes with each season but remains superb in all conditions. Depending on the water level, small islands appear, vegetation develops and then everything disappears when the water level rises.
The track which allows you to follow the Loire is in perfect condition here.

Saint-Aignan Church of Sandillon

Highlight • Religious Site

There were two churches in Sandillon from the Middle Ages, one dedicated to Saint Aignan and the other to Saint Patrice, which was rather the parish of the écarts and the beautiful surrounding residences. Each of them was surrounded by a cemetery. The Saint-Patrice church was deconsecrated during the Revolution, then destroyed, a plaque located on rue St Patrice still indicates its location. Only the Saint-Aignan church remained standing, much smaller. During the first half of the 19th century, the building, which was deteriorating due to lack of repairs, was no longer sufficient to accommodate the faithful. Initially oriented towards the east, in the direction of the rising sun, like many churches it was oriented towards the north when it was rebuilt in 1860-1861.

Beautiful view of the Loire

Highlight • Viewpoint

The view of the Loire here is truly magnificent. Away from road traffic, you can observe many species of birds.

In the distance, you can see the beautiful town of Châteauneuf-sur-Loire.

Combleux

Highlight • Settlement

A picturesque village between the Orleans Canal and the Loire, Combleux was once a transit port when the Loire navy was expanding.

Traces of the old port activities are still visible: the bargemen's houses, the canal controller's house, and the lock keeper's house.
