Description
If you're looking for a challenging and incredibly scenic gravel cycling adventure, the Rich Mountain loop from Walhalla delivers. This difficult touring cycling route covers 46.6 miles (75.1 km) with a substantial 3821 feet (1165 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 5 hours and 49 minutes to complete. It's a perfect choice for experienced cyclists seeking a tranquil escape through stunning park scenery, especially when vehicle traffic is restricted.
What to expect on Rich Mountain loop from Walhalla
Expect a journey through dense forests, occasionally opening up to scenic overlooks that showcase some of the park's very best scenery. The route is primarily well-maintained gravel with consistent 4–6% grades, making the climbing manageable but sustained. Once you descend into Cades Cove, the landscape transforms into wide-open meadows, dotted with historic cabins like the John Oliver Cabin, and offers abundant wildlife viewing. This is a challenging ride due to the significant elevation gain, best suited for cyclists comfortable with long climbs and gravel terrain.
Planning your visit
To truly enjoy the Rich Mountain loop, plan your ride when Rich Mountain Road and Cades Cove Loop are closed to vehicle traffic. This typically means mid-November to mid-April for Rich Mountain Road, and on Wednesdays during the peak season (mid-June to late September) for Cades Cove. Riding when vehicles are present is considered unsafe and is not recommended. The route offers a tranquil escape, particularly during these times, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the park's beauty.
