Shelter on the Ascent to Teck Castle

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Small open wooden hut after the first steep ramp before the final descent to the Teck. From here, paths go down towards Owen and Bissingen from the Teckberg. Good protection against sudden rain.

The legend to Sibyllenloch:
In a castle deep down in the Sibyllenloch at the foot of the Teckfelsen lived the Sibylle, a wise woman; she helped many who wanted to get advice, because she knew everything and foresaw the future. Many treasures of gold and gemstone kept her hidden in her castle in the depths, but she was benevolent: many poor in his misery did not climb the steep path to her for nothing. But the three sons of the sibyl were of another blow. They built their own castles behind the Teck up the valley, one on the Rauber, the other on the Diepoldsburg and the third on the Wielandstein. From these castles they plagued the peasants and plundered the merchants; In short, as much as the good Sibyl did good, so much did her sons evil. That's why the good mother was ashamed of her unruly sons and did not want to stay near her anymore. One evening she drove on a fiery chariot pulled by two wild cats from her cave through the air; you could see her hair fly like a tan in the evening sun. But no one knows where she went. Only in the places where their car cut a track on the ground, the grain grows more abundant than anywhere else - the last blessing that the divorced leave to the people.

Teck Castle

Highlight • Castle

The summit castle Teck is located at 773 meters on the Albtrauf in the Swabian Alb. The Swabian Alb Association runs a restaurant and hostel here. A great place for a break on the mountain bike tour, even if the approach is very steep. You can find information about the castle and the offer up there: burg-teck-alb.de/burg-teck.

The first flight attempts by pioneers such as Wolf Hirth took place on the Teckberg in the 1920s, as well as on more famous glider airfields such as the Wasserkuppe. Starting in 1928, flight and working groups from the surrounding communities and cities built, maintained and flown gliders on their own. At this time, the take-offs took place on the sloping slope of the Hörnles and later also from Hohenbohl and Yellow Rock. [1]

In the years that followed, a clubhouse and two hangars, one of which is still in use today, as well as tow lifts to transport the planes up the mountain and the Nabern-Teck airfield were built so that the Teck site could be inaugurated in 1934. [ 2]

Due to the ambitions and support of the National Socialists, a gliding school was founded on the site in 1935, which was first used for civilian purposes, but later served the National Socialist Aviation Corps as a pilot school for the Air Force. [3] Nevertheless, important competitions took place on the airfield up to 1939, which were also popular with innovations such as winch launching and aircraft towing, as well as the use of thermals in addition to uphill winds.

During the war years, civil aviation use at the Teck glider airfield largely came to a standstill, and the Schempp-Hirth and Wolf Hirth companies, which had their headquarters at the airfield in Nabern, were included in the war-related production for the Messerschmidt and Dornier companies. [4 ]

After the war, the airfield came under the supervision of the Americans, who carried out dismantling measures on the facilities on the Teckberg. Only the large flying hall and the club house were spared. When gliding was permitted again in West Germany at the beginning of the 1950s, the airfield could no longer be used as such, as it was used for agriculture. It was not until 1956 that flight operations could be resumed at the actual Teck glider airfield. At that time, the majority of the region's aviation groups were already using the newly built and now world-famous airfield on the Hahnweide in Kirchheim. [5]
