Old St. Georg Church Großweil

The "St. Georg" church in Großweil probably dates from the early 13th century. Gothic frescoes from this period were uncovered during the renovation in 1986. It is very likely that the origins even go back to the year 800, because a chancel panel made of sandstone from this time was also found in 1986 and clearly dated. In the 18th century the church was baroque, extended in 1835 and a new tower was built. Due to the large increase in population of Großweil after the Second World War, the church became too small and in 1961 a new building was built about 100m away. So there are two St. Georgs in Großweil: Alt-St.Georg and Neu-St.Georg. Today, in the old church shown here, the weekday services are mainly held, while the Sunday services and high masses are celebrated in the new church.
