Kandel Ascent

Highlight • Climb

The climb from Waldkirch to the 1,204-meter-high Kandelsattel not only offers a respectable height difference of a good 900 meters, but the route also offers an almost Alpine flair with its winding and partly steep course. One of the most beautiful climbs in the Black Forest. Currently (12/2022) the lower half has been newly asphalted, but the upper half is in poor condition. Which doesn't matter on the way up, but requires caution on a possible descent and significantly reduces the fun.

Kandel Serpentines

Highlight • Climb

One of the sporting highlights in the Black Forest is the north-west ascent to the Kandel from Waldkirch. Here you climb almost 1,000 meters over a distance of 12 kilometers. The asphalt isn't quite as good anymore, but that doesn't bother you so much uphill - with up to 18% it doesn't roll that well here anyway.

Kandel Summit Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Kandel attracts many visitors, both in summer and winter. There is plenty of parking space at the top of the pass. There is also a starting point for hang gliders and paragliders. The hotel at the top of the pass has been closed for a long time. There is a kiosk where you can buy drinks and small snacks. There are also some seating areas from which you can easily watch the planes.

Kandel Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Kandel offers an ascent of quite alpine quality with the starting point in Waldkirch. A good 900 meters in altitude and up to 13% incline on a narrow mountain road demand one or the other drop of sweat. You will be rewarded with a great view from the high point at 1,200 meters down into the Elztal, the Rhine plain, across to the Vosges and, with good visibility, even to the Alps in the south.

The route from Waldkirch is also recommended for the ascent because of the quality of the roads. Currently (01/2022) it has numerous potholes and longitudinal cracks in the upper area, which make the descent quite rough. Renovation measures were in progress in 2019 and 2020 and so the first almost 350 meters in altitude and 3.6 kilometers from Waldkirch are smooth and freshly asphalted again. In general, the route is much wider in the direction of St. Peter/Glottertal, but here too the ravages of time are gnawing, and in some sections you have to be careful on the descent.

St. Peter Panorama

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This small Hoferschließungsweg is an attractive alternative to the direct descent from Kandel to Glottertal. Well paved leads the way over pastures with the best views, which extends to Feldberg, over to the pass between St. Peter and the Glottertal. Here you can either continue to St. Märgen or via St.Peter to Freiburg or directly to Glottertal. A little caution, in the curves like sand.

Highlight • Religious Site

Large and spacious church/monastery square. Very beautifully designed inside.

Vineyards above Glottertal

Highlight • Natural

The vineyards in the Glottertal, which lie above the village, are somewhat unusual for the Black Forest, but are therefore all the more interesting.

Glotter Valley

Highlight • Gorge

Probably the most famous valley in the area but not necessarily the most beautiful. In the lower part it is still quite flat towards St. Peter and then becomes a real uphill climb. Due to the large number of tourists, the traffic is usually quite heavy.

The construction site is passable - and the road is therefore free of any motorized individual traffic 🤩

Immediately after the cardiovascular clinic, I met a “colleague” from Lake Constance and was tortured with him. Above was a group from Holland: racing cyclists just get along ☝️
PS: the text on the jersey is incorrect..... I'm quite slow uphill and I don't start grazing at the top 😂🙈

After certainly more than 100 descents of the Waldkirch/Kandel climb, I had the road all to myself for the first time this morning - just me, the mountain, the waking day, the forest, countless enthusiastically chirping birds and my bike. A real treat, which was crowned at the summit by an exceptionally beautiful view.

Today I thought about turning back a few times (right after Altenbach for the first time). Then I remembered what a football friend told me last night at the campsite in Kirchzarten: ".... you never gave up, even when we were hopelessly behind.....".

Since I never get home before 7pm during the week and the weather looks bad for the weekend, I faced my love/hate relationship... I have to ride a few more times so that we become one 😉

Around noon, the cold NE wind, which was not very spring-like, woke up again - a bit of a pity, the morning promised a warm spring day. Nevertheless, the sunshine was nice, but still "a bit" sporty for a short time on the candelabra 🥶.
Unfortunately, the diversion of the B31 via St. Peter is still active - I saved …

The road bike tour begins in Waldkirch, a charming little town in the Black Forest. From there, it goes straight into the mountains, with the Kandel as the destination. The climb is challenging, as it is a steady uphill climb from Waldkirch to the summit. The route is around 12 kilometers long and overcomes almost 940 meters in altitude. The …

In principle, more of a lark...
But the wings are weak in the morning.

Nevertheless, I used the late working day to climb the killer beforehand.

Pure reward. The smell of freshly mown grass, the blossoms of the linden tree...great light, cool, no one on the way to the canopy...
Humility.
