Harpener Ponds

Highlight • Lake

Werner Teiche or Harpener Teiche are located in the immediate vicinity of the Ruhrpark in Bochum. There is a wide variety of flora and fauna here, keep your eyes open. There are people in the Ruhr area who claim that the Harpener Teiche are one of the green, happy places in the Ruhr area.

It's about the fabulous turquoise shimmer, which is reminiscent of parts of the water landscape like a blue lagoon in the South Pacific.
Dissolved minerals from the pit water from the mining of the Robert Müser colliery explain the occurrence of this curious water coloration in the northern part of the Harpen ponds. So the sulfur still comes into play and lets out bad smells from time to time, but you shouldn't let that deter you, because the beautiful surroundings clearly predominate.

In this article I would like to introduce you to the Lorraine route, the route begins directly at the Lothringen dump in Bochum Gerthe. The route should be extended further in the direction of Castrop-Rauxel.
The Lothringentrasse itself has been around as a cycle path for a long time!!! but has recently been optimized (has been given an asphalt surface.) The route is approx. 6.0 km long and connects Gerthe with Bochum Hiltrop, the route shows us very nicely the transformation of the Ruhr area from old industrial areas (Lothringen colliery in Gerthe and Constantin 10 in Hiltrop) to new commercial settlements in Gerthe and Hiltrop. The north of Bochum is changing slowly but steadily, which is very nice to see on the route.
At the current end I have the option of driving to Altenbochum to the Springorum route about 4.0 KM or driving to Tippelsberg.
It's not far from Tippelsberg to Bochum city center, approx. 3 km, unfortunately not on cycle paths.
