A former garbage dump as a hiking highlight is a bit unusual. This one is located directly on the circular hiking trail around the Wernsdorfer See and on the NSG of the same name. When you come out of the forest, this monstrous mountain suddenly builds up in front of you and that's kind of impressive.
The Wernsdorf landfill is bounded by the Wernsdorfer See in the north-west and by Neu Zittauer Straße in the south-east. The landfill was put into operation in the 1950s in an old gravel pit and was given the status of "regulated landfill" in 1982. With a disposal area of 22 ha and a capacity of around 4.5 million m³, it was the smallest of the three landfills operated by Berlin's municipal cleaning services.
Waste dumping ceased in May 2005. An active gas collection system with subsequent gas utilization was installed throughout the body of the landfill. The electrical energy generated is fed into the public grid. Part of the heat generated is used for internal use. The end of the follow-up phase is undetermined.
