Quimper

Highlight • Other

Quimper, the historic capital of the Cornouaille, is today the cultural, political and economic center of the department of Finistère. Worth seeing in the city center are the historic old town with its many half-timbered houses, some of them from the 16th and 17th centuries, the Cathédrale Saint-Correntin and the Musée des Beaux Arts. All information has the Office de Tourisme

Saint-Corentin Cathedral

Highlight • Other

History of Saint Corentin Cathedral
It was in 1239 that Bishop Raynaud decided to build the current cathedral based on the foundations of an old Romanesque cathedral. In 1410, the choir vaults were completed, while the glass roofs were installed in the high windows. In 1424, Bishop Bertrand de Rosmadec undertook the construction of the nave and the two towers of the facade.
From the 1850s, the Quimper architect Joseph Bigot undertook the restoration of the building, mainly the decoration of the chapels and the order of new stained glass windows destroyed during the French Revolution. Its most spectacular achievement remains the completion of the two towers with the construction of the spiers between 1854 and 1856, financed by the people of Quimper.
From 1989 to 1999, a restoration campaign revealed the appearance of the cathedral at the end of the 15th century: restoration of the interior polychromies with the reappearance of the ribs treated in yellow ocher and red ocher and general liming of the facings.

Max Jacob Theatre

Highlight • Monument

It was built between 1902 and 1904 by the architect Lafont. After Urbain Couchouren bequeathed an orchard to the city in 1893 to build a hospice, the city decided to build a theater there. A trial and a reckoning followed... This was the subject of Terrain Bouchaballe (1923 novel and play by Max Jacob). In 1942, Gaston, Max's brother, was arrested in the theater garden (which was forbidden to Jews). He died in Auschwitz in 1943.
In 1997 the theater was renamed "Théâtre Max Jacob".

Quimper - a great city

Highlight • Other

We had chosen our accommodation opposite the train station because we are taking the TGV to Paris tomorrow.
Quimper surprised me though - it's simply a beautiful city - the real tourist crowds are probably yet to come.
