Roughcastle Tunnel

Situated at the top of the Falkirk Wheel where the canal goes through this tunnel to the next set of locks

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world. This feat of engineering stands at 115 feet tall and, using the power of eight domestic kettles, transfers boats 79 feet (24 m) through the air between the Forth & Clyde Canal and the Union Canal. Boats must then ascend another 36 feet (11 m) through a pair of locks between the top of the wheel and the Union Canal. There is a visitor centre here with facilities and information on the Wheel.

Carron Valley Red Trail

Highlight • MTB Park

A very short (only 8km) red (but really it should be blue) trail through the woods at Carron Valley. The trail has an excellent all weather surface so holds together well in the wet, although drainage can be an issue so expect big puddles. A little short and a bit tame, but cracking for a few laps, especially at night in winter. Lots of gravel tracks through the forest too that are worth exploring.

Worth checking Forestry and Land Scotland's website before heading off as they quite often close the trail for forestry work.

Opened in 1939 Carron Valley Reservoir provides water for about 135,000 people. There are nice easy trails around the reservoir or the managed woodland or use this as a base to start a longer run up Meikle Bin or one of the other hills.

Quite simply put if you hate climbing don't follow this route 100% 😂 was a fantastic morning for it but Jesus was hard on my legs so glad to get home get some food and relax but also pumped that I finished this in just on four hours when the root was predicted as taking five and a half so …
