Neue Mühle Erfurt – Technical Museum and Watermill

Highlight • Monument

The Neue Mühle is a technical museum on the Schlösserbrücke in the Thuringian capital Erfurt. It is located on a branch of the small river Gera, which operates the mill's hydropower plant. It contains a grain mill with an undershot Zuppinger water wheel and is the last functioning mill from the former 60 in the city. It has been named "New Mill" since it was rebuilt after the fire of 1735.

The Breitstrom arises just behind the Long Bridge in the center of Erfurt from the confluence of the Bergstrom and Walkstrom. The broad stream flows past the New Mill, under the Castle Bridge, under the Rathausbrücke, under the Krämerbrücke and under the Lehmannsbrücke. It also branches into a few separate arms, but they all run close together. In Venice in the north of the old town, the branch of the river known as Wilde Gera, coming from the east, used to flow into the Breitstrom, from which the Gera arises again. However, the Wilde Gera has been filled in since 1898. North of Erfurt's old town, the river is again referred to as the Gera.

Town Hall Bridge Erfurt

Highlight • Bridge

The Venice is a park-like area in the Thuringian state capital Erfurt. It forms the north-eastern boundary of the Andreasviertel. The 300 meter long and up to 105 meter wide area is characterized by the Gera, which branches out several times and forms some islands.

Krämerbrücke, Erfurt

Highlight • Bridge

The Krämerbrücke is one of the oldest buildings in Erfurt and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. It is built on both sides with half-timbered houses and spans the Gera. It connects the Benediktsplatz in the old town center with the Wenigemarkt, which lies at the eastern end of the Krämerbrücke.

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town is simply beautiful. No matter how often you stroll through the streets and alleys, you always find something new. My personal highlight is the Krämerbrücke.

Petersberg Citadel

Highlight • Historical Site

This only largely preserved baroque city fortress of Central Europe, on the site of a former Benedictine monastery, is due to the rule of the Kurmainz family in Erfurt and a reflection of European fortress architecture. For centuries, it has shaped the cityscape of Thuringia's state capital. Star-shaped it was considered the most modern plant of the time and as impregnable. The mysterious Horchgänge the fortress can be visited with a guide. The small military history museum at the entrance shows the former living conditions within the plant.

Schlösserbrücke, Erfurt

Highlight • Bridge

The Schlösserbrücke is located in the Schlösserstraße in Erfurt and leads over the Breitstrom, a branch of the Gera. During the Second World War the bridge was badly damaged and later rebuilt and reinforced. Today there is even a tram over it. Many day trippers and lovers immortalize their love with a lock and thus live up to the name of the bridge.
