A Gütersloh contribution to the EXPO 2000 World Exhibition in Hanover: The internationally renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson created this scent tunnel as part of the EXPO project “Garden_Landscape East Westphalia Lippe”. The arcade consists of around 30 strong-smelling (to calm you down: predominantly fragrant) plant species such as lavender, climbing roses, sweet violets, Madonna lilies, poet's daffodils, mountain alyssum, lily of the valley, clematis, akebia, thyme, honeysuckle and Japanese honeysuckle. Two plume bushes grow opposite the entrance to the scent tunnel.

The scent tunnel is included in the NRW SKULPTUR directory, a “juried selection of outstanding art in public spaces in NRW from the period after 1945”.

Avenstroth Mill (Sundern Mill)

Highlight • Monument

The Avenstroth mill, also called Sundernmühle, is one of the oldest watermills on the Dalke in Gütersloh's urban area. The exact time of origin cannot be determined, but it may go back to the 6th or 8th century.
It is the only fully operational watermill on the Dalke in Gütersloh. As a leaseholder, master miller Siegfried Friese operates the grinding mill and runs a feed store.
