Inundation Canal

Highlight • River

INUNDATION CANAL as an essential part of an extra water inlet for possible inundations, which would make use of the traditionally existing Kromme Rijn. The approximately 350 meter long Inundation Canal from the Lower Rhine to the inlet sluice / inundation culvert east of Wijk bij Duurstede was dug shortly after 1870 in order to flood the area south and southeast of Utrecht. These works and locks in the Kromme Rijn, which were built at the same time, could be opened, after which the water let in could flow to the northwest via the meandering river, which had already been dammed in the Middle Ages.

As the name may suggest, this special forest did not always look like this. About 10 years ago there was still a beautiful forest along the Schalkwijksewetering on this spot. However, the drainage in the area and the Schalkwijksewetering caused some problems. When heavy rains passed by, the water had difficulty finding its way and often remained in the same place.
