Pretty little harbor in Lüchow-Dannenberg's smallest town. The port is fed to the south by the Aland River, which flows into the Elbe north of the port. There is a wooden observation tower in the harbor, from which one has a beautiful overview of the Elbe and the Schnackenburger Elbe Valley. The Schnackenburg port is located in the triangle of three countries: just behind the port is the state border between the federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, the other (northern) side of the Elbe belongs to the state of Brandenburg. Behind the harbor (just before the mouth of the Aland in the Elbe) you can cross the Elbe by ferry (by car, bike or on foot).

Schnackenburg Village

Schnackenburg is an idyllic little town (the smallest and most easterly town in Lower Saxony) lying at the mouth of the River Aland and the Elbe. Unfortunately, there are no shops / supermarkets in Schnackenburg, the nearest supermarket is in Gartow, about 10km away. A visit to the borderland museum is recommended (Schnackenburg was a small border town in GDR times and bordered on the GDR to the north (over the Elbe) and to the east (land border).
Nowadays (since the fall of the Wall) there is also an Elbe ferry (for cars, bicycles and pedestrians) that can be used to cross over to the village of Lütkenwisch (Brandenburg). The small harbor is also pretty, with a wooden observation tower on the north-eastern edge, from which you can enjoy a great view of the Elbe and the mostly flat landscape in the area. A very nice area for cycling, in addition to the Elberadweg there are several other interesting cycling routes.

Elbholz Floodplain

Beautiful meadow landscape on the banks of the Elbe. The area can be reached via the Elberadweg, which leads here from Pevestorf to Schnackenburg (in Pevestorf and Schnackenburg there are ferries across the Elbe during the day, with which you can cross the river cheaply). The area is characterized by forest, meadows and many brackish areas. There are many large, old oak trees in the area, e.g. the (now dead) royal oak Elbholz (named after a visit by King George V in 1865).

This wonderful meadow landscape is one of my favorite areas in Wendland: Lots of nature, beautiful scenery, tranquility, good chances of seeing wild animals and rare birds and a beautiful cycle path that runs mostly off-road along the Elbe dike.

I also use the area often and enjoy taking pictures of the starry sky. Since light pollution is very low here, great astrophotographs can be taken in the clear, moonless sky.
