House of the gladiator

Highlight • Historical Site

This building is probably a luxurious private residence - perhaps also a small public palaestra (sports facility). The building, named after the main motifs of the floor mosaics, lies between the Nymphaeum and the House of Achilles, very close to the north-eastern edge of the hill, and was built in the second half of the 3rd century. In the 4th century the entire building was destroyed in the course of devastating earthquakes.

House of Achilles Mosaic

Highlight • Historical Site

Inside this house, which dates back to the 4th century, there are floor mosaics with motifs of pagan tradition. The location at the entrance to the city was taken as evidence that the building served as an apanteterion - i.e. as a reception area for official visitors. The central image of the floor mosaic shows the meeting of Achilles and Odysseus in the house of Lycomedes. Achilles was sent there disguised as a woman by his mother, who wanted to prevent her son from dying in the Trojan War.

However, since Troy could not be defeated without Achilles, Odysseus used a ruse and presented himself to the king with gifts of weapons. Suddenly blowing the war horn, Achilles breaks himself by taking up arms. The mosaic represents this moment.

Early Christian Basilica of Kourion

Highlight • Historical Site

The early Christian basilica dates back to the early 5th century and was probably the church of the first bishops of Kourion. The remains that remain show that it must have been an imposing building. The basilica has been decorated with wall and floor mosaics and marble relief work.

Along the north side of the basilica is the baptistery - a small three-aisled basilica with narthex and atrium.

House of the Earthquake, Kourion

Highlight • Historical Site

This private house can be visited by going left up the city hill of Kourion, where the road curves towards the theatre. It was built in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, then remodeled in the middle of the 4th century and shortly afterwards (July 21, 365) it was totally destroyed by a strong earthquake. The ruins of this house present a picture of everyday life in the city of Kourion at the time of the earthquake disaster. All the objects unearthed there are now exhibited in the local museum of Kourion, in Episkopi.

Death came in his sleep, which is also told in an exciting way. In the tablinum (dining room), archaeologists found the skeletons of a nuclear family, later called "Romeo and Juliet". The man (about 25 years) had tried in vain to protect his wife (about 19 years) and small child (maximum 1 1/2 years) from falling stones with his body in the "spoon position".
