Sämtisersee, Alpstein region
The picturesque Sämtisersee is located above Brülisau in the municipality of Rüte in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. The Appenzell mountain lake is located at the foot of the Hoher Kasten in the Alpstein region at an altitude of around 1200 meters above sea level. The Seealpsee and the Fälensee, the other two larger lakes in the Alpstein, are each about three kilometers (as the crow flies) to the southwest. The Sämtisersee is fed by various streams, especially the Sämtiserbach.

Lake Sämtiser

Highlight • Lake

Sämtisersee at 1200 meters
As with Fählensee, there is no outflow to be seen here. The water from both lakes flows underground and reappears in the Rhine Valley. Outflow or not, enjoy a refreshing swim!
The water level fluctuates greatly, which is why Sämtisersee almost dries out in very hot summers.

Plattenbödeli mountain inn since 1911 at 1284 m above sea level.
Unique landscape in the Alpstein.
1911 - Innkeeper Jos. Anton Dörig "Mattle" (great-grandfather of Platte Hans and grandfather of Meglisalp Mile) bought a piece of land at the exit of the Brüeltobel and built a small guesthouse, which he soon handed over to his daughter Franziska Inauen-Dörig.
1917 - Handed over to daughter Franziska Fritsche-Inauen.
1930 - Alfred Fritsche built the current inn.
1934 - Electric light was used for the first time on the Plattenbödeli, powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine and an Örlikon battery.
1958 - Son Hans and Alice Fritsche-Holderegger bought the business. To remedy the water shortage, a 1000m long pipe was laid from the Alp Rainhütte through the lake. The spring is 60m higher than the Plattenbödeli and thus the water flows into the reservoir with counter pressure. The diesel system was enlarged and a dishwasher and a washing machine were installed.
1964 - The mule track through the Brüeltobel is expanded as a road.
1971 - The kitchen is added, the toilet facilities are converted and the restaurant with a self-service buffet is renovated. The main entrance is moved to the sunny side and the terrace is extended. A separate sewage treatment plant is built and the diesel system is renewed.
2022 - Alois and Manuela Inauen Sager purchase the mountain inn.

October 15, 2024,Sämtisersee - Ruhsitz. Wanderung von Brülisau aus.
Thanks to the less than ideal weather forecast, the Alpstein was not as crowded as usual today... Very nice and fairly easy hike - the Brüeltobel is a bit tough with a gradient of more than 20%.
Wonderful autumn colors! Unfortunately we only had sun for the first 15 minutes, after that the light and with it some of the …

We started in the morning from the parking lot at the Hoher Kasten valley station, from there we went back to the Pfannenstiel and then steeply up to the Plattenbödile mountain inn where we had our first refreshment. (Very tasty chocolate and whiskey cake)
Then we went back over the Sämtisersee towards the rest area in Brülisau.

At home, despite the sunshine, it was still a freezing 0°C, while in Brülisau it was a warm 8°C thanks to the Föhn wind chill, though it felt noticeably cooler in some places. Depending on the location, it was either fully sunny or in the shade. The Hoher Kasten cable car was closed due to the Föhn.

First Alpstein winter hike, together with my son 😊

A snowshoe tour was planned, but since there was only a good 5 cm of snow in Brülisau, we left it in the car and set off on foot, a bad decision, as it turned out further up...
At the top there was a whopping 35-40 cm of fresh snow, in …

Yesterday, due to massive fog, it was almost impossible to do a sensible tour without a lot of effort. Today it was better, fog up to a good 900 m (later decreasing), sun above 🌞
When starting in Brülisau (just above the fog line) it was sunny at -4°C, the tour ended at +2°C.
The official Plattenbödeli winter hiking trail …

You can park at the Pfannenstiel car park or in the Brülisau village center. The hike starts quite steep, but from Ruhsitz you more or less maintain the altitude. Then a fairly steep descent to Sämtisersee. Here you can have a barbecue or, after an easy climb to the Plattenbödeli, grab a bite to eat in the small, beautiful inn. …
