In its long history, the monastery was never completely destroyed and only partially rebuilt. Today, the monastery complex is characterized by an interplay of the most diverse architectural styles from the most varied of eras and styles. Architectural highlights include the church and the Holy Cross Chapel from the Wilhelminian era, the 8th century, the Planta tower from the 10th century and the bishop's residence from the 11th century.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
When the St. Johann Monastery was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983, the current prioress was surprised that such a dilapidated monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the nuns still had to set up bins and buckets when it rained.
The wall paintings in the monastery church were decisive for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the largest and best-preserved fresco cycle from the early Middle Ages.
