Here too, on the village square of Riom, the facade of St. Lawrence's Church, inspired by Italian models, dominates.
The Church of St. Lawrence can be considered the oldest sanctuary in the Oberhalbstein. The oldest building on this site dates back to the 6th/7th century. Even if the patronage is not attested in the Middle Ages, Lawrence is always referred to as the patron saint later on. St. Lawrence worked in Rome as an archdeacon under Pope Sixtus II and suffered martyrdom by the sword during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian in 285. In art, he is depicted in the official attire of a deacon and with a rectangular wheel, because legend tells of his death on a gridiron.
Previous churches were consecrated in 1461 and 1493. The present Baroque building was consecrated on October 2, 1677. The village fire of 1864 also affected St. Lawrence's Church. The last restorations took place in 1936 and 1955.
