Among the families who have left a tangible sign of their presence in Casier over the last 150 years, the Toso family should be remembered. The villa was built by the cav. Angelo Toso (1830-1914), then owner of the homonymous mills in Silea, who by chance inherited the land located between the Roggia and the Sile from the widow of an Austrian general. In the midst of the world conflict, in August 1916, comm. Angelo Gino Toso, gifted with great human sensitivity, decided to open a reception center for war orphans. He then bought a block of flats and some fields bordering the park of the villa, the former land of the Comin foundry. The new orphanage was to be inaugurated on November 1, 1917, but after the defeat of Caporetto it was requisitioned and occupied by the retreating troops. Later it was used as a lazaret and military hospital, where the illustrious American novelist Ernest Hemingway was hospitalized on 8 July 1918. The orphanage came back into operation in 1920 and remained active until 1943, when it was requisitioned by the Treviso civil hospital.
