San Donato Gate, Lucca

Highlight • Monument

It rises on the northwest tilt of the walls between the strongholds of San Donato and Santa Croce. It is one of the best preserved of the city gates of Lucca. The outer facade is supported by the central body surmounted by a large triangular tympanum with rectangular divided by moldings and marble borders. It has a single arch flanked by two pedestrian doors (called fianchette) of which the right one is fake. On the base of the facade are the statues of San Donato and San Paolino. The central marble cartouche with the motto 'Libertas' has been lost; the inner facade is very simple with high windows encompassing the interior and the upper loggia on pillars under which the wall patrol road runs. portcullis, the small guardhouse flanked by two loopholed rooms used as positions for the gunners. In the main guard house there are two more images of devotee: a frescoed Madonna on the hood of the invisible path and a holy face in stucco on the hidden door of the militia.

St. Michael's Square

Highlight • Religious Site

Also called "the city of a hundred churches", Lucca is one of the most beautiful and loved cities of art in Tuscany. The amphitheater, its walls, the Cathedral of San Martino are just some of the many attractions not to be missed in this city which is located on the Via Francigena and on the Cammino del Volto Santo. The Volto Santo is a large wooden crucifix found inside the cathedral of San Martino.

City Walls of Lucca

Highlight • Monument

The city walls of Lucca, like those of Pisa, are well preserved, making them ideal for wonderful walks and bike rides. Characteristic of the city walls are the wide tree-lined avenues and the beautiful views over the city. The city walls were built around 1500 and completed in 1645.

Lucca City Walls

Highlight • Monument

Lucca has one of the most impressive fully preserved city walls in Europe. The wall with the Italian name "Mura di Lucca" is almost 4 km long and completely surrounds the historic center. The city walls are more than 10 meters high in many places. In the past, the city was accessed through 6 gates, today there are more entrances. On the tree-lined wall there is a wide circular path.

Historic Centre of Lucca

Highlight • Historical Site

The birthplace of Giacomo Puccini. is a gem that no one should ignore. Behind the heavy fortress walls that bear witness to a glorious past, lies a particularly atmospheric medieval town with rich and exceptional architecture. Life is good in Lucca, where cyclists and pedestrians come and go in the lively, narrow streets. Because of the church facades that almost look like lace, the two old towers that have been saved from the hundred that used to reach the sky and the oval-shaped Piazza dell'Anfiteatro with its cozy terraces, it is tempting to stay a little longer in Lucca.

A beautiful route along the Sieve River. Nevertheless, you can't miss one or two of the main roads.
Some of the route is a bit nonsensical, so check the map every now and then.

The weather is a shame everywhere at the moment... well, almost(!) everywhere, because the weather app predicted acceptable temperatures (17°C!) and sunshine with no(!) chance of rain for Pisa - while it was supposed to rain all around(!). Finally, the app was right 🥳 and that not only pleased me, but also the many, many Vespa fans who had come …

Since Pisa doesn't have much to offer apart from the leaning tower, we parked our camper van in Lucca, 20 km away, and cycled to Pisa. Despite the 36 degrees Celsius, it was a lovely tour.
