The Sculpture Park

Highlight • Monument

The Sculpture Park offers an astounding experience for anyone fascinated by modern sculpture and creative expression. On a gloriously sunny day with soaring temperatures, the extensive tree canopy provided a welcome, deliciously cool retreat. This dense woodland cover also masked many of the installations until you were right upon them, making each discovery a delightful surprise.

If I have one constructive criticism, it is the sheer density of the display. The sheer volume of sculptures packed onto the site meant that smaller or more subtle creative works were easily overlooked, especially when competing for attention against larger pieces framed by open vistas. Ultimately, this high concentration felt somewhat detrimental to the collection as a whole.

By comparison, settings like Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Jupiter Artland, Crawick Multiverse, and the Goodwood Art Foundation give their pieces room to breathe. In those settings, sculptures can be appreciated both from a distance and up close, allowing visitors the time and space to contemplate an individual work, the sculptor’s vision, and its relationship to the surrounding landscape—an experience that was somewhat lost amidst the visual overload here.

Is it worth visiting? Definitely—just be prepared for the sheer scale of it. Personally, I found the volume of pieces a bit overwhelming - as highlighted above.

On a clear day, the King’s Ridge provides a fine vantage point for Frensham Little Pond, one of the largest lakes in Surrey, and for the heathland of Frensham Common, one of the finest heathlands in Surrey.

The King’s Ridge runs north-south between Frensham Little Pond and Frensham Great Pond, and is named because King Edward VII reviewed his troops from up here. The Ridge is about 300 feet (90m) above sea level.

The views northeast, across the sandy heathland of Frensham Common to the blue waters of Frensham Little Pond, is beautiful. The scene also displays a soft, silver sand path and colourful vegetation. Depending upon season you may also see yellow gorse and/or magenta heather.

Frensham Little Pond Beach

Swimming is not permitted at Frensham Little Pond, but this still makes a lovely spot to pause for a while. You can see straight across to the reed beds on the eastern shore. The beach is set in a backdrop of pine trees. A lovely place to hang out on a hot summer's day.

Tern Café is a National Trust café near the car park at Frensham Little Pond. It's a friendly place in a great location with lots of benches to sit and enjoy the sun. They serve a nice selection of drinks, snacks and light meals.

Frensham Little Pond

Highlight • Lake

Frensham Little Pond is a glorious place to hike. It is surrounded by pine trees and sandy hills so makes the perfect location for a longer jaunt taking in the local area or a hike round the pond is under 3km so is perfect for families with children or for a shorter, largely flat, hike. There is some sand and it can be quite rooty by the car park.
There as been a lake here since the 13th century when the Bishop of Winchester decreed a dam be built. The resulting pond provided fish for when he was staying at nearby Farnham Castle.

Frensham Little Pond

The little pond was created in the 13th century to supply fish for the Bishop of Winchester. Today Frensham Common and the ponds are internationally important for the plants and animals which live on the heath. It's managed by the National Trust.

Axe Pond, Flashes Court Common

This is a tranquil pond located within the Flashes Court Common. It's an important habitat for various species of wildlife including amphibians, birds and aquatic plants. There are lots of connected walking paths here and in nearby Frensham and Hankley Common.
