Ugíjar Roman Aqueduct

Highlight • Monument

Ujígar aquiduct - still in work
The Roman aqueduct of Ugíjar is one of the most important and visited engineering works in the Alpujarra. Recently this active water channel has been improved and conditioned with lime mortar and a removable tramex walkway thanks to the Provincial Council and the ADR Alpujarra-Sierra Nevada. According to the local professor and historian, Joaquín Rincón Carmona, “the Ugíjar aqueduct was built by the Romans to bring water from the Nechite River to the Fuente del Arca, a watering hole and place in Ugíjar where a ravine passed and where the water was distributed”, relates.

The Ugíjar “aqueduct has a wide longitudinal development built of masonry and formed by four openings of semicircular arches with shale mica voussoirs. These are level with each other at the top, presenting different heights depending on the slope of the terrain, with those corresponding to the north side being the ones that collect the passage of water”, indicates Rincón.

This very ancient structure located in the municipality of Ugíjar and a few meters from the road that goes to Válor and other towns “has a tamajar pointed at the basin that rests on the channel. In the aqueduct work, the mechinales corresponding to the scaffolding structure can be seen. The aqueduct overcomes the unevenness of the Rambla de los Arcos. This water conduction system is called card, and its reform was financed with the benefits of the assets in the time of Carlos III”, says researcher Joaquín Rincón Carmona.

The Ugíjar aqueduct is one of the most important works of Roman civil engineering in the Alpujarra. The Romans built many aqueducts in Spain to provide water to cities and towns. Water channels like the one in Ugíjar, so solid as to have surpassed many centuries of history.

According to historian Joaquín Rincón “, it is known that in Ugíjar there was important industrial development in Roman times due to its geographical location and its great wealth of gold and other metals. Some authors even talk about its Greek origin, associating it with the mythical place of Odysseia, cited by Strabo”, this endearing lover of the culture and history of the city of Ugíjar ended by saying.

Birthplace of Abén Humeya, promoter and first leader of the Moorish rebellion in 1568. He was born into a Moorish family converted to Christianity after the conquest of Granada in 1492. He left Christianity in favor of Islam and fought against repression of the Muslim faith and customs and the breach of the Capitulations of Granada and the laws of Carlos I and Felipe II. Said rebellion, which lasted three years and spread throughout the province, was violently controlled by the latter monarch.
