At the beginning of the Middle Ages, Marche was only a small hamlet, on the Marchette stream, one of the outbuildings near the Stavelot abbey. In the 12th century, this territory was part of the county of La Roche. It is ideally located, on the main road between Namur and Luxembourg, and quickly turned into a commercial city which obtained its charter in the 13th century. At the end of this century, in true medieval fashion, it acquired a complete system of defensive walls with the two gates, a series of watchtowers and a keep. The market square and religious organizations, such as the Carmelites, a convent founded in 1473, can thrive in the walled city.
