Peribleptos Church

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1295, the Byzantine general Progon Sguros and his wife Eudokia, the daughter of Emperor Andronikos II, founded a church that was initially dedicated to the Mother of God Peribleptos (Periblèptos Περιβλὲπτος = highly respected). Only when the relics of St. Kliment were later transferred did the church, which was now the archbishopric main church due to the conversion of the Sophienkirche into a mosque, received the name Sveti Kliment. The Byzantine brick building on the plan of the "inscribed cross" is provided with an octagonal dome and a stepped altar apse. In the 14th century, two side churches were added on either side of the chancel.

Samuel's Fortress

Highlight • Castle

The shape of the Samuil Fortress dates back to the time of Samuil, although there are also data on demolitions and repairs of the fortress by the Turks and Byzantines. It features walls ranging from 10 to 16 meters high and several meters thick. On all sides, except the south, facing the lake, the hilly part of the city near the port of Ohrid was protected by three kilometers long high walls and towers. With its fortifications and walls, it covers the entire Ohrid hill. Today, 18 towers and four gates remain from the fortress. Parts of the fortress extend to the lake and to the lower hill of the Old Town of Ohrid. There were three gates in the Old Town, of which only the Upper Gate survived. In its walls, many stones with Greek inscriptions are built in. Under a partially demolished outer layer in the inner walls, horizontal layers of bricks in the Byzantine format can be seen.

The year of construction (in the time of the Byzantine Emperor Andronicus II Paleologus) is determined by the text in the inscription above the entrance. The church is a wonderful whole of a beautiful building and rich fresco painting. It is popularly known under the name of St. Clement. It dates back to the 15th century, when the Turks destroyed the monastery of St. Clement on Plaoshnik to its foundations and the remains of St. Clement were transferred here. It became a cathedral church, that is, it became a temple of the Archbishops of Ohrid, when the Archbishop's Church of St. Sofija was converted into a mosque. In addition to the first head of the MOC, the following three heads (Angelarij, Gavril and Mihail) were enthroned in this church.

We cycled the first 2.7 km to Ohrid, from there we walked about 5 km to the castle and through the town before cycling back to the campsite.

Just throw the stuff in the room and then walk over the boulevard to the old city center. What a super atmospheric city this is, winding cobblestones up and down, picturesque houses, old cars and vans... very cool! We walk over a kind of wooden plank bridge to a well-known bar for a drink. All restaurants and cafes are here …
