View of Hornberg Castle

According to the oldest documents, Hornberg Castle was a Gaugrafenburg and later a knight's castle at a steep 228.6 m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur above the Neckar valley above the town of Neckarzimmern between Bad Wimpfen and Mosbach. The spur castle originally consisted of two independent castle complexes with a common outer bailey, which were later enclosed by a wall. Götz von Berlichingen lived at Hornberg Castle for 45 years, for which he was already enthusiastic as a teenager. The winery belonging to the castle, the second oldest still existing winery in the world according to documents, operates traditional viticulture on steep terraces below the castle.

The castle was named "Monument of the Month August 2013" by the Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg.

View of Bad Wimpfen's Old Town

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bad Wimpfen is located on the left bank of the Neckar about 10 km north-northwest of Heilbronn, as the crow flies. Its older part, Wimpfen im Tal, runs along the river in its left-hand floodplain, which is quite wide. A little west of there is Wimpfen am Berg on the upper slope to the left of the river valley that rises towards the Kraichgau. There, in the Middle Ages, the Staufer Palatinate and the mountain town were built on an eastern spur above the slope of the river below, which turns north, and the small side valley of the Adamsgraben, which tapers bluntly from the southwest. The newer parts of the city spread out on a flatter slope, especially to the west.

Bad Wimpfen also includes the suburb of Hohenstadt, two kilometers to the northwest, which is located on the left slope of a slightly larger side valley that runs east towards the Neckar.

With the exception of a tiny gap at the mouth of the Jagst opposite Wimpfen in the valley, the urban area of Wimpfen lies to the left of the Neckar and is mostly on undulating land about 200-250 meters high. There is only a narrow strip of forest on the Neckar slope, as well as somewhat larger forest islands on the northern and western city limits. The majority of this hilly plain drains directly to the Neckar via small valleys. Only in the southwest do some watercourses beyond the city limits initially flow to the Böllinger Bach, a slightly longer tributary of the Neckar.

A very controversial project, very expensive. The cycle path was already well developed at that point, and then there are the costly construction measures for the Frießinger Mill and the two planned bridges, at the marina and the dam. The new surface is certainly a dream, but it won't last forever. The slightly wider expansion offers more space for busy traffic, but it has also resulted in the loss of nature. The bridges will be great and make cycling to the footbridge easier, and the bottleneck will be eliminated. However, the bridge maintenance costs will be enormous in one to two decades, and the connecting path will consume even more nature.

In my opinion, there are towns that are poorly connected to the cycle network, or not at all, than Wimpfen to Heilbronn; it would have made more sense to invest here.
