The Wachtl quarry is located on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria, near Kiefersfelden (not Ruhpolding). For many decades, limestone and marl were mined here for the Kiefersfelden cement factory and transported down to the valley on the historic Wachtl Railway. Today, mining has largely ceased, and a small lake has formed in the former pits. Nature is slowly reclaiming the site—a silent testament to industrial history and the power of the landscape around Thiersee.

Giessenbach Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The Gießenbachklamm is an easy going gorge. There are a few steps (just under 100) until you're up, so unfortunately not suitable for strollers. Otherwise very suitable for children.
No danger spots and entertaining. No entry.

June 6, 2023,🥾 Gießenbachklamm 🦎🌲
Great little hike 🥾. The way through the gorge is not long but really beautiful. The Schopper Alm is absolutely for families, the children will have a lot of fun there. From the Schopper Alm it's a forest road 🌲🪵 to Troyer, a mountain farm with a long history. From there via a relatively steep asphalt road back to the …

Nice round trip over Schopper Alm to Gießenbachklamm and back. The first climb is very steep but easy to walk on the road (toboggan run in winter). Once at the top, it's pretty flat past a beautiful alpine meadow to the Schopperalm. Walking time approx. 1 hour. The Schopperalm can also be reached by car. Very cozy, friendly staff and …

I'm sorry that there are soooo many 📸 today 🙈
I couldn't get enough of it 🤩 the gorge isn't that special (Breitachklamm or Starzlachklamm are nicer) 🤷🏻‍♀️ but the nature was great 👍 again and again 🪻🪻orchids and even lady's slipper 😯 wonderful 👍
The 👁️👁️ from the Trojerhof into the valley, simply beautiful 👍🤩😍🥰

Wonderful, relaxed tour through the Gießenbachklamm with dear friends. Was just right for our 'pensioner gang' today. Great food in the Schopperalm - highly recommended! Back via the Trojer-Hof with wonderful views of the Kaiser Mountains.

The circular route to the Schopperalm is very nice, since we went the other way around according to Komot, it went up a bit steeply on an asphalt road. Until you reach the forest after the farm. The path to the Schopperalm is well marked. The Alm alone is very beautiful and idyllic. Children also get their money's worth. The …

A hiking tip for hot days: Via the Trojerhof to the Gießenbach stream, to the Schopperalm, and back through the Gießenbachklamm gorge.

The hiking trail runs mostly through the forest and is accordingly shady. You can swim in the Gießenbach stream. Don't forget your swimsuit.

Showing Translation

Easy child-friendly hike. Sturdy shoes are still mandatory! In the cool stream just before the highly recommended Schopper Alm you can refresh your feet 😊 so don't forget your towel. Have fun hiking 💪🏼

A hike that demands everything from you. Unfortunately, the pictures don't show the difference in altitude very clearly. Definitely worth the trip.
