Kratt tree in Stellmoorer Tunneltal

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Kratt use was a medieval method of intensive forest use. Trees, especially oaks, were cut down just above the roots to extract tannery, whereupon they formed again shoots. The shoots were used as firewood and construction, the branches and leaves as fodder and the bark for tanning.

Wandseteich Pond

Highlight • Lake

The "Wandseteich" is a retention basin and the largest body of water in the Stellmoorer Tunneltal. The Wandse dam, built in the 1950s, dams the irregular water loads of the small river and releases them only slowly into the lower reaches. In this way, it carries water for longer than under natural conditions. The disadvantage of the retention basin: its water heats up considerably, which makes life difficult for typical flowing water creatures in the lower reaches.
The Höltigbaum is traversed by the Wandse, a tributary of the Alster.
Since the original source was diverted, the Wandse is now fed exclusively by the low water from the surrounding area. The Wandse therefore only carries water in the Höltigbaum temporarily during the year and usually dries up as early as May. Only after the confluence with the Stellmoorer Quellfluss does the Wandse turn into a constantly flowing watercourse.

The "wall pond" is a retention basin and the largest body of water in the Stellmoor tunnel valley. The Wandse Dam, which was built in the 1950s, dams the irregular water loads of the river and only releases it slowly to the lower reaches. In this way, it holds water longer than under natural conditions. The disadvantage of the retention basin: its water heats up considerably, which makes life difficult for typical river creatures in the lower reaches.

The Höltigbaum is crossed by the Wandse, a tributary of the Alster. Since the original source was diverted, the Wandse is now fed exclusively by the low water in the vicinity. The Wandse in the Höltigbaum therefore only carries water from time to time and usually dries up as early as May. Only after the confluence of the Stellmoor spring river does the Wandse change into a steadily flowing river.

Also at the moment (October 27th, 2020) the wall pond has almost dried up again, despite heavy rainfall recently. For a few months now, a fence has also prevented access to the beach in order to better protect the birds.

The Stellmoorer Tunneltal in Hamburg-Rahlstedt is known for its wide, open meadows. In late summer, heather blooms here and there, bathing the landscape in a soft purple. The landscape provides a habitat for many insects and birds. In order to preserve it sustainably, the sensitive ecosystem of the Stellmoorer Tunneltal is under nature conservation.

Here the path leads through the middle of the Höltigbaum and, depending on the season, the meadow is either very green or very dry, as it is now at the beginning of summer.

I know this former military training area from my active time. Meanwhile, he has changed a lot and you hardly recognize him, only the Panzerringstraße is preserved. It has become a beautiful nature reserve with endless paths. And with the MTB it's just so much fun.
