Eikelberg Climb

Highlight • Climb

Nice climb just outside Aarschot. From the north it is a nice climbing sunken road. From the south, the climb is significantly less impressive. I haven't seen many acorns here.

Averbode Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The Norbertine Abbey is a living embodiment of spirituality and (church) culture. Around 30 brothers live here, their day structured by three communal prayer times: morning prayer, the Eucharist (at midday), and evening prayer. If you wish, you are welcome to participate. Even if you are not religious, the chants and prayers may offer you a moment of peace and reflection.

On the grounds, you will also find an experience center dedicated to traditional crafts. The old farm buildings now house a monastery café with its own brewery, a bakery, and a monastery shop.

By the way: You can also stay overnight in one of the guest rooms.

Information and registration: gastenkwartier@abdijaverbode.be.

Cycling Cafe De Kriekel

Highlight • Cafe

Very nicely decorated cycling café with an absolute racing heart.

At the front of the cycling café you can do minor maintenance on your bike and take a seat on the spacious terrace. Inside you will find many references to cycling and the race is always on TV. An absolute must on the menu: the pancakes. Even Wout van Aert regularly comes here for this delicious snack.

Do you like cycling? Then this is an absolute must. Ideal before, during and after your bike ride.

You can find more about this cycling café at wielercafes.nl/de-kriekel.

⚠️ Update October 2022: the cycling café is unfortunately permanently closed, due to the ongoing price increases.

Maagdentoren Zichem

Highlight • Monument

The Maiden's Tower is the attraction of Zichem. On June 1, 2006, part of the fourteenth-century Maiden's Tower collapsed. A disaster, because the monumental keep could no longer be restored to its original state. The huge hole was filled with gray brick. Since then, you can climb the tower on weekends and in July and August every day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the top you have a beautiful view over the Demer valley. According to tradition, Rosita, the daughter of the lord of Zichem, was imprisoned in the top room of the tower. She was in love with a common soldier and that was not to her father's liking. Rosita had to and would remain a virgin, hence the name 'Virgin Tower'. The Maiden's Tower is freely accessible at the following times
From March 15 to August 31, every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
From September 1 to October 31 : on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am. until 5 p.m.
During the autumn holidays every day from 10 am to 5 pm

Great Mill of Zichem

Highlight • Monument

Watermill with metal undershot wheel on the Demer, 50 meters north of the church of Zichem, built in 1758. On March 2, 1994, the mill was protected as a monument and together with its surroundings as a village view. The building is now home to a home and doctor's practice, but the milling area is still preserved and separated with a glass wall. Unfortunately, the waterwheel has now been cut off from the Demer, so that turning has become impossible.

The mill became especially famous as a setting for the film adaptations of De Witte, the famous book by Ernest Claes.
