Danby Beacon

Highlight • Historical Site

Danby Beacon dates back to the 1600s, when Britain was living under the threat of French invasion. Fast forward to the 1930s and the site became one of the first radar stations built to protect the North East during the Second World War. It was functional until the 1960s.

The old wooden beacon eventually fell to ruin. However, a modern beacon has been put up in its place and serves as an important landmark in this part of Yorkshire. A blue, stainless steel basket mimics a flame, over 16 feet (5 m) above the ground. It is held aloft by a corten column, designed to reflect the colouring of the surrounding moorland.

It occupies the high ground above the villages of Danby and Lealholm and rewards with a staggering panorama on a clear day.

Fast and rocky at the top - watch your pedal doesn’t catch. Then smooth and bouncy over the grass at the bottom.

Yorkshire Cycle Hub

Highlight • Cycleway

Absolutely worth checking out as this place is quite amazing. There's everything one might need for an ace day (or week) out on the bikes, whether you're into road, gravel, mtb or touring. Really knowledgeable staff with a huge passion for spreading the love of cycling.

There's a cafe, bike shop, hire bikes, bike wash, drying room, camping pods and a modern, really clean bunk house for big groups. Seriously, worth a trip. Also set in a beautiful little valley called Fryup Dale which has such quiet, pretty (tough) roads for cycling.

Great Fryup Dale

Highlight • Viewpoint

This place deserves to be a highlight for its name alone, thankfully it is also a gorgeous place to ride your bike.

Glaisdale Rigg Track

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This is a terrific bit on the moors - huge amount of space around you and lots of heather. Perfectly suitable underfoot for runners, too!

Being a ford by name and nature, it is obviously possible to get right down to the water's edge on both sides of the river, which can be crossed via a small wooden bridge. Great place for a quick break.

Bit undefined on bridleway after heads house farm and one bogged down bit of singletrack otherwise not bad for November.
