Halde 22

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Halde 22 is a small and quite old spoil heap in Gladbeck on the border to Essen and Bottrop. Even if the Halde 22 is completely overgrown in the meantime, its small and winding paths still invite you to climb. Due to its remoteness and its larger, more well-known siblings, Halde 22 has almost been forgotten. This makes her much calmer and also has something enchanted about her. The only pity is that the vantage point at the summit is so overgrown that the summit compass no longer allows a view of the former collieries and other industrial landmarks marked there.

The heap is completely fenced. And yet it is something special - it harbors an old secret inside.
When the bombings increased towards the end of the Second World War, miners dug a tunnel into the large tailings dump. It was a tunnel with numerous side rooms and branches. The mighty mountain masses offered good protection for people. The so-called Moltke tunnel was converted into a hospital in 1945, in the last year of the war. It should provide protection for staff and patients. This hospital tunnel still exists today, but is not accessible. On the contrary: Due to the danger of collapse, all access points are sealed and the heap is cordoned off all around. In places, there have even been cave-ins when the ceiling of the tunnel collapsed under the pressure of the weight of the overburden and the forest that had grown over the many decades. At times, a declaration as a memorial was considered, but was rejected.

Hahnenbach Riverside Path

Highlight • Trail

Even though it does not carry much water and has been redesigned (in parts) for a long time, it is still worth a visit along the entire stream...
