On the beautiful northern shore of Lake Traunsee lies Gmunden, a lively spa town that attracts many visitors every year, not least because of its southern charm. A stroll through the charming alleys is worthwhile, and not only for those interested in culture.

Ramsau is a very common name, so it is good to always ask which Ramsau is meant. Once a place in Styria, or the excursion restaurant on the Laudachsee or this inn on the Traunsee.
You can sit comfortably in the shade under old chestnut trees. And the specialty of the house is the Ramsauer Spitz. A dessert made from meringue and frozen whipped cream that has been available here since 1947, as the senior landlady explains. Your mother created it after the war. And it still tastes good!

Here is the last parking lot at the end of the street under the Traunstein. On the shore of the lake is a lawn that is also used as a landing area for the rescue helicopter. Unfortunately, the Gmunden mountain rescue service has to use this place too often.
From here it is only possible to walk along the Miesweg along the lake or into the Lainautal back to the Maieralm or on the Traunstein.

Gmunden

Highlight • Settlement

The city is known, among other things, as the place of origin of Gmundner ceramics, as a renowned summer resort during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. u.k. Monarchy and as the setting for the television series Schlosshotel Orth, produced in the 1990s.

The original center of the city was the market square. When it lost its importance during the heyday of the salt trade, the town hall square developed into the city center (Wikipedia).

Wonderful place with a beautiful house facade and a view of the lake with its mountains. If you are there at the right time, you can also hear a chime.

View of Schloss Ort

Highlight • Viewpoint

The impressive 130-meter-long wooden bridge leads visitors directly to the picturesque Ort Castle, which sits on a small island in Lake Traunsee. With its remarkable Renaissance arcaded courtyards, the castle attracts numerous tourists year after year who want to discover the history and beauty of this place. Since 1995, the castle has belonged to the municipality of Gmunden, which maintains it with great dedication and preserves its historical splendor.

The castle's history is as fascinating as it is multifaceted; in 1915, it was transferred from the estate of Johann Orth to the state forestry service. Over the centuries, Ort Castle and the Ort estate changed hands several times, resulting in an interesting cultural heritage. This eventful history makes Ort Castle a significant part of the region, captivating visitors both culturally and architecturally.

Of course you can drive to the end of the road at the bathing area by car. But then you miss out on many beautiful views, ahead of you into the mountains that tower into the sky on the banks of the Traunsee. And back to the enchanting, almost a little sophisticated Gmunden, which resides so majestically on the lake. …
