Memorial to the Children of the Dyje River Tragedy

Memorial towns for children from a school class who drowned here on May 26, 1936, in the floodwaters of the Dyje (Thaya).
A teacher from the small village of Rakvic wanted to cross the Dyje (Thaya) near Nové Mlyný with the students of an elementary school (grades 1 to 10 in the Czech Republic). Some children who couldn't swim rode along in a horse-drawn cart. When the horses panicked in the middle of the river, the cart overturned, and the children fell into the water. Shortly thereafter, a storm struck, turning the Dyje into a dangerous raging torrent. Of the nearly 100 children, 30 drowned in the floodwaters of the Thaya.
The then President of the Czech Republic, T.G. Masaryk, subsequently commissioned the construction of these memorial towns. Every year on May 26, the children who died in the accident are commemorated at the memorial site.
