Alkmaar city centre

Highlight • Settlement

Battle of Alkmaar in 1573

In 1254 Alkmaar was granted city charter by the Dutch Earl Wilhelm II. But as early as the 11th century, a settlement of traders and peasants was built around a church that belonged to the parish of Heiloo.
The city became the symbol of the Dutch freedom struggle in 1573 and received its motto: "The Victorious", which also appears as a symbol of arms. When, in the 80 years of war, the Spaniards had taken Haarlem after a difficult struggle, they advanced to Alkmaar and besieged the city. But by the courage of the defenders of the city, the fighting fatigues of the besiegers and through
The besiegers had to give up tactical flooding of the surrounding polders on October 8, 1573. Similar to Leiden this day is still celebrated every year.

The Canals of Alkmaar

Highlight • Structure

In Alkmaar, the canal sprites chuckle, with Frisian spirit and seagull murmurs. Bridges poop echoes over green waves, and bicycles sail like crazy bells.

The houses laugh crookedly at the water's edge, shutters wobble to the rhythm of the hand. Cheese scent drifts through the quiet blue, and every canal has its own gray.

The boats chatter with a cheerful beat, they carry mustaches of rope and tax. A waiter waves quietly from the pier, “Another cheese platter?” – The answer: “Already hot!”

Benches on the shore tell stories, of canal pros and pigeons with duties. The sun paints lights, the waves make fax, and Alkmaar grins as if it were a little fun.

So the city splashes through day and night, until every gust of wind laughs a little song at you. Grass, cheese, curio stuff – Alkmaar, you glittering canal full of charm.

The pillory used to be here. Three striking facades from right to left: the Silkworm, the Kroon, and the Leeuwenburg.

Today we all went to Alkmaar. Put the cars on the P&R and then took the 'expensive' bus to the center. No P&R rate as we had expected. Walked through the city nicely Alkmaar coffee and tasting house took a break. And because the small streets are the most cozy we unexpectedly ended up at Sweet & Antiques. A small …
