Andermatt train station

Highlight • Rest Area

Train station, Andermatt
Andermatt train station is a junction station of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) in the north of the municipality of Andermatt in Uri. In addition to the regional trains of the MGB and the Glacier Express, the Andermatt train station is an important hub for the post bus routes over the surrounding Alpine passes. The station was opened during the First World War on July 11, 1917, when the Schöllenenbahn began operating, initially only in summer. Year-round operation began in 1925 and the main line of the Furka-Oberalp Railway from Disentis to Brig was opened the following year.
At the station there is a memorial plaque in honor of Ludwig Danioth, who fought for the construction of the Furka Base Tunnel as President of the Furka-Oberalp Railway and Council of States of the Canton of Uri.
The new pedestrian underpass on the east side of the station was opened at the end of 2017 together with the commissioning of the Gütsch-Express gondola lift in the ski arena. This connects the future main building on the north side with the valley station of the gondola lift and the village on the south side of the station.

Dorfstrasse Andermatt

Highlight • Settlement

Village bridge, Andermatt
During the stagecoach era, which lasted from 1830 to 1882, between 60,000 and 80,000 people traveled over the Gotthard every year. The square around the village bridge was then the hub and center of Andermatt. Imagine the busy activity in the few square meters. The stagecoaches used to stop here before tackling the Gotthard. The passengers were served a warm meal at the Hotel 3 Könige & Post while the postilion replaced the exhausted horses. There was often little time for their own food, so according to stories it was not uncommon for the postillions to cool down the soup that was too hot with wine
