The short half kilometer over the dam to the castle ruin Kalø is at the same time a journey into a past 700 years past.
At the end of Denmark's longest medieval street, which was built at the same time as Kalø Castle, one can certainly imagine what life was like beneath the castle walls. It was King Erik Menved (1274-1319) who had the castle built after the destruction of a Jutland peasant uprising in 1313.
The construction was very modern with, for example, a flanking tower - the first of its kind in Denmark - which forms a kind of side wing close to the large tower. Kalø Castle was imposing and virtually impregnable. In reality, however, the castle was supposed to keep its internal enemies in check: farmers with influential people from society at the top. It was the peasants who built the castle under duress.
