From March to May, more than 40 bird species breed in the nature reserve: greylag geese, shelducks, oystercatchers, avocets and common gulls (around 2,000 pairs in 1993) as well as skylarks and barn swallows. Thousands of sandpipers and Nordic duck species also rest and overwinter here.
