Ortahisar, 6 km away from Ürgüp, is home to the once strategically important Ortahisar citadel, a must-see place with fine examples of Cappadocia's vernacular architecture, clustered around its base. Another must-see sight is the Üzümlü Church on the western side. Ortahisar Castle is considered one of the first multi-story settlements in the world, making it a unique architectural curiosity.
