Bischofberger Appenzeller Bärli-Biber Bakery

Highlight • Cafe

The original from Weissbad in Appenzell! The Bärli-Biber or s'Biberli, as I personally call it, is probably known by every Swiss person. It is made here in Weissbad – the recipe dates back to a tradition of over 500 years, wow!

If you come by here on your bike, you can boost your sugar levels again in the shop and the Bärli-Biber-Welt. Here you get the freshest Biberli straight from the oven!

Appenzell Village Center

Highlight • Settlement

Appenzell Village, the main town in Appenzell
In 1870, an interior renovation was undertaken, which removed valuable old features and was generally considered a failure. Just 20 years later, in 1890, a thorough interior renovation was undertaken. This resulted in the room we see today. The choir stalls, the windows, all the ceiling paintings, chandeliers, side lamps, side altars, organ, stucco work, confessionals, and the altar table of the high altar also date from this period. The high altar structure and the frescoes on the choir walls date back to 1622. The last restoration of the nave was completed in 1969. This primarily served to preserve the existing features. The visible fusion of church and state is noteworthy. In the choir arch are the Rhod candles, which are maintained by the Rhoden and only burn on major holidays. This depiction of the banners captured during the Appenzell Wars dates from 1891. Originally, the original flags, which were saved during the village fire, were displayed above the pulpit. Damaged, they were replaced with copies. In 1822, these were moved to the armory and now hang in the local museum. It is an ancient Swiss custom to display captured standards in churches as a token of gratitude for protection granted. This is similar to the custom of placing votive images in pilgrimage churches in thanks for healing from illness or rescue from life-threatening danger.

Appenzell Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

Rustic mountain village in a fantastic location, inviting an extended break. The prices for food and drink might be quite touristy, but the Swabian option with Coop and Migros at the entrance to the village also works.
