Mont'Alfonso Fortress

Highlight • Castle

A ruin with a stunning view! Unfortunately, as with all tourist attractions, there's a lot of trash. It's still worth a visit.

There's a large parking lot right in front of the gate, so you don't have to walk up.

The small town of Garfagnana is located in the mountainous region of the same name in the Italian province of Lucca. A beautiful little place with a wonderful church.

Ariostesca Fortress

Highlight • Castle

The Rocca Ariostesca is the symbolic monument of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Dominating the central Piazza Umberto, it takes its name from the poet Ludovico Ariosto who was replaced as governor of the province of Garfagnana in Este from 1522 to 1525.
There was already a small garrison on the site in the 10th century, but the structure of the fortress can be said to date back to the 12th century; modified during the thirteenth century, it was familiarly enlarged at the beginning of the fourteenth century by Castruccio Castracani, who extended an extension of the entire walls of the village; it was Paolo Guinigi who commissioned the construction of the imposing tower in the center of the Rocca, decorated with the civic clock, the terrace overlooking the square was built in 1675, the same with the opening of the monumental entrance arch to the city center.

Definitely worth taking a look inside. Special are the wrapped pillars in red velvet.

Historical indication:
The cathedral was rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century in Renaissance style on a former Romanesque church from the 11th century. In the Baroque era, the interior underwent major changes, with the addition of nine altars, displaying the typical decorative splendor of the time. The prayer house has been restored after the damage caused by the last war.
