Ahlsburg Ruins

Highlight • Castle

If you visit the Ahlsburg, you will only find the ruins of the Reichs- und Höhenburg. You can only see the remains of foundations, foundations and the moat. It is believed that it was built in the 12th century, and it was first mentioned in 1357. The lords of the castle were responsible for protecting the Reichsbann forest in the area.

Boundary stone on the dam as a reminder between East and West. Here the inner-German border not only ran through the middle of the reservoir, but also directly over the dam wall.

A beautiful place steeped in history! A small information board on the well-kept white dam house gives interesting information.
On the Saxony-Anhalt side, various rocky outcrops and stones invite you to take a break with a very nice view of the lake and the wall.

The Eckerstausee is fed by various tributaries and is used to supply drinking water and energy: there are two turbines below the dam. If you walk over the 60-meter-high dam wall, you cross the former inner-German border between the FRG and the GDR.

Former GDR state border with border post

Highlight • Historical Site

Again and again you come across the black, red and gold concrete border posts along the Harz border road. They are the already weathered witnesses of the long-standing separation within Germany.

Today we explored the Eckertal. It was supposed to be a tour of around 9 km, but somehow it ended up being a bit longer... Sun, rain and thunderstorms were all there today. It wasn't all that bad, except for the old border path, which leaves a lot to be desired.
