Trail with a view of the Granat Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Granatkapelle, which is located on the sunny plateau of the Penkenjoch, east of the bank of the reservoir, is definitely worth a detour. This beautiful chapel made of local wood and steel combines the history and landscape of the Zillertal in a unique way. It is intended to represent the stark contrast between the rationality of man and the organic essence of nature. As a real eye-catcher, it is dedicated to Blessed Engelbert Kolland, whose home parish, Ramsau im Zillertal, can be seen from the chapel.

The Granatkapelle, or Capella Granata, is the first building designed by the Swiss star architect Mario Botta in Austria. It is not without reason that he gave the chapel the structure of a rhombic dodecahedron, which is the smallest form of a polished garnet. Also called "Karfunkelstein", this is considered a Zillertal folk gem, after all it was mined here for centuries. As a traditional piece of jewelry, garnets still adorn the Zillertal woman in traditional costume today!

After a 2-hour rain break in the Granatalm, we went for a quick lap 🌦🙈

Today we went for a short walk on the Pengen.
First we went to the Granatalm, where I waited patiently for Volker, who was walking up from the mid-station. I was definitely too lazy for a long hike today! 😃
From there we went to the Granatkapelle (Granat Chapel). We looked around, marveled, took photos, and signed the chapel book. …

With the Penkenbahn up, we had a nice walk with beautiful views!

Actually just a simple walk at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Many inns invite you to linger. Can also be collected for children in a “hiking pass” stamp booklet. It is also clear that there are a lot of people of all ages out and about here. In sunny weather a fantastic view. Be sure to check the weather and …

Beautiful panoramic winter hiking trail. Well signposted but quite strenuous in soft snow. Parking at the bottom of the Finkenberg Bahn. With parking garage. There's food on every corner. Look a little at the prices are not the same everywhere.

Fantastic weather ☀️❄️🥰... short winter hike at over 2000 m above sea level. Temperature was shown as 5 degrees 😅 and was therefore higher than in the valley 😂. The
first day of vacation couldn't have been more beautiful❣️

Craziness! I don't know when I last saw such masses of snow. As a child of the Ruhr area you are not used to that at all.

Everything glitters and sparkles, and the dazzling white almost hurts my eyes when I get to the top of the Kombibahn mountain station. 🤩
