Newby Bridge is a hamlet situated on the banks of River Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Historically part of Lancashire, it takes its name from the five-arched stone bridge built across the river in 1651. Within the hamlet, you find accommodation and food and drink. There is a stop on Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway here, too.

Hawkshead Grammar School

Highlight • Historical Site

The Hawkshead Grammar School, founded in 1585 by the Archbishop of York and closed in 1909, is recommended to every visitor of the small Cumbrian town. Entry

No doubt the most famous former scholar was William Wordsworth - his name is still carved into the surface of one of the School’s wooden desks today.

Opening times are April to October, Monday to Saturday from 10:30 am to 1pm and 1:30 pm to 5 pm. Listen to the small talk on the school, and dare to ask a few more questions - the guides are friendly and possess a wealth of interesting facts.

If you are feeling adventurous, why not run or walk the Windemere circular, a great excuse to pitch up a tent half way round and truly take in the sights on offer around this lake,

Low Wood Bay Marina

Highlight • Structure

Windermere Lake ends a mile short of Ambleside at Waterhead, and can come as a shock to boat passengers expecting to be in the town. Crowded around the bay are boats, hotels, cafes, tourist shops, and places selling food for the ducks and swans.

Steamers and launches sail daily throughout the year between here and Bowness, about halfway down the 12 mile length of the lake, and Lakeside at the far end. From here you can take a ride on the three and a half mile Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway. There is a horse-drawn carriage taking passengers between Waterhead Pier and the centre of Ambleside.
