Mine entrance and Geul sinkhole — Plombières Nature Reserve

Highlight • Cave

The Plombières mining site is an industrial and natural site located in Plombières, in eastern Belgium. Between the 14th century and 1922, zinc and lead ores were mined and processed at this site. This mine was the most important lead mine in eastern Belgium and the third for zinc. It flourished between 1856 and 1882.

Vaalserberg Three-Country Point

Highlight • Monument

With a height of no less than 322.4 meters above NAP, the Vaalserberg is the highest mountain in the Netherlands (with the exception of the mountains in the Caribbean). So you are standing on the roof of the Low Countries! The mountain is not only known for its height, but also for the three country point you will find here; here the borders of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet. In addition, there are plenty of activities for young and old on and around the top, so hang out here for a while.

Steep Drop Trail

Highlight • Trail

It's worth it to take care of the approx. 1.20 m high drop so as not to scare a walker ;-)

Forest Trail Along the Railway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Very nice narrow trail that only tends to become overgrown in very few places in the summer. In good weather and on weekends you have to be very careful, as the route is often used by mountain bikers.

Plombières Quarry

Highlight • Natural Monument

From the information board at the quarry: "This limestone, dating from the Paleozoic (Carboniferous period), came to the surface through the erosion of the Geul river. It was formed by deposits from a sea that covered the region about 320 million years ago. We are in the hinterland of Herve, an area whose soil is characterized by many faults and fissures. Ore veins have formed in these, reaching the surface in many places".

And that indeed means quarries and mines. Or as the board continues about this particular spot: "Until the mid-twentieth century, this was a stone quarry. Many older houses in the region were built with these stones. The former lime kilns in the immediate vicinity bear witness to the use of this rock for the production of lime".
